The New Zealand Bushtail Possum is the size of a large cat and has thick, luxurious fur. About 80 million of these nocturnal marsupials cause enormous ecological damage to New Zealand's forests and native birds, including the national icon, the Kiwi. Possumdown® is the first ever commercial blend of possum fur and superfine merino wool from the sheep that graze in the South Island's high country. Developed in 1991, possum merino is said to be the first new blend of natural fibres in the world for over 100 years, and it is unique to New Zealand. Bob and Helen Powell, owners of Possumdown® Knitwear Ltd., attribute their rural farming background and their desire to help reduce the rampant possum population to their development of this outstanding product.

The unique property of Possum fur is that each fibre is hollow. This gives excellent ensulation qualities ensuring that possum fur and merino wool garments are lighter compared to some other heavier knitted items.

Possum fur is 16 to 17 micron (very fine) and when blended with fine Merino wool ensures a luxurious and soft handle to the fabric. Rigorous tests have proven that.
