Ann Gray
Ann Gray introduces herself as follows: I like to begin my day with a walk, either along the beach or through the bush. This gets me close to nature and uplifts my spirits, thus setting the scene for the day ahead. My aim, when I paint, is to pass these emotions into the eyes and heart of anyone looking at my paintings. Colour and light are particular features of Ann’s paintings. “The whole world is nothing but light, and to the eye that is where the beauty lies. You react to light, which appears to be colour, and light affects the human spirit”. Her themes are drawn from nature around her, capturing in detail Aotearoa’s flora, fauna and scenery. “I like to take a specific subject out of its natural surroundings and isolate it - to focus on its beauty. Alternatively the wide expanse of the ocean makes a compelling theme. It can be very therapeutic, tranquil and calming to the soul, or wild, tempestuous and energising.” Ann has traveled the world, living in Europe and Asia, and says New Zealand boasts some of the most beautiful beaches to be found, with a unique natural heritage.

The Huia (Heteralocha acutirostris) was a bird endemic to New Zealand. It is now extinct. The bird had blue-black plumage, bright orange wattles at the gape and white-tipped tail feathers. It was the only bird known in which the bills of the male and female were radically different. The male's beak was short (approximately 60 mm) and straight while the female's beak was long and curved (up to 100 mm), a striking example of sexual dimorphism. Huia had been little studied by Western naturalists before they were driven to extinction.

Its taxonomic family is also known as that of the (New Zealand) "wattlebirds" and includes the two subspecies (one for each main island) of the Kokako as well as the extinct Huia. All members of this family have coloured fleshy appendages on either side of the beak known as "wattles". In the case of Saddleback/Tieke, they are a vivid red in colour.
